Minimum Expectations for Safety Orientation - Contractors

Orientation helps new and transferred employees become familiar with the contractor's and Marathon's safety policies and procedures at the worksite. Marathon requires that every contractor and subcontractor employee receive a formal safety orientation as a condition of work authorization before starting the job.

A three-level orientation is recommended:

Industry Safety Orientation
SafelandTM and SafegulfTM orientation are accepted by Marathon as meeting the industry safety orientation requirement. An equivalent safety orientation program is acceptable provided it covers the topics included in the SafelandTMand SafegulfTM programs, as applicable to the scope of work performed by the contractor.

Contractor Company Safety Orientation that includes:

  • Contractor company policies - HES, Alcohol and Drug, Weapons, etc.
  • Alcohol and Drug abuse monitoring
  • Hours of work/management of fatigue
  • Job responsibilities
  • Job hazards and safety precautions
  • Safe work systems and practices
  • Personal Protective Equipment requirements
  • Behavioral Safety/hazard identification and reporting arrangements
  • New on Job / Short Service Employee identification and mentoring plan
  • Incident and accident reporting
  • Location of first aid station(s) and fire extinguishers
  • Emergency alarms, muster and evacuation procedures
  • Regulatory requirements
  • Safety enforcement procedure

Marathon Site Safety Orientation
A Marathon site safety orientation must be received by each contractor and subcontractor employee wishing to perform safety-sensitive work at a Marathon location. The orientation is usually provided by Marathon at the worksite or the field office and should be requested by the contractor well in advance of the work.

Note: Safety orientations are intended to provide a basic understanding of work hazards at the awareness level and do not fulfill training requirements prescribed by regulations, industry or Marathon standards.
