Conventional Technology

AboutUs-Technology-ConventionalMarathon leverages our technical capabilities in reservoir characterization, drilling and completions, enhanced oil recovery (EOR) and heavy oil/in-situ recovery to capture additional resources from current assets, including unconventional oil and gas reservoirs.

The key to optimizing production and resource development is quick and accurate description of reservoirs. Marathon's expertise in reservoir characterization begins with seismic imaging, but emphasizes integration of all geoscience, petrophysical and engineering data into fully integrated solutions. The benefits of this approach are higher success rates in discovery, drilling and production activities.

Integrated solutions are especially critical in solving challenges associated with more complex unconventional and heavy oil (in-situ) reservoirs. The Company has extensive experience in evaluating and operating carbon dioxide (CO2) injection projects, the most widely used EOR method in the world. CO2 injection reduces reservoir forces that trap oil in place, making it easier for oil to flow. Additional benefits include improved oil quality and reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

Marathon is working to develop numerous technologies to improve the efficiency of our Canadian oil sands opportunities, including novel bitumen extraction technologies that could fundamentally change the economic and environmental footprint of (heavy to very heavy) oil sands development around the world, non-catalytic standalone field upgrading of heavy oils, production of pipelineable syncrude and conversion of refinery residues into distillates. Commercialization of oil sands research projects will ensure proper allocation of resources to corporate assets under AOSP and heavy oil/in-situ assets in Canada.

Drilling and Completions

Building on the Company's ability to drill and complete wells in the most rugged operating conditions, Marathon engineers have developed leading-edge technology in the fields of drilling and completion.

The Company licenses these technologies to qualified manufacturers and service providers, sharing the value of our innovative solutions and ensuring these field-proven technologies continue to evolve.

EXCAPE® COMPLETION PROCESS

AboutUs-TechnologyLogos-EXcapeThe EXcape® Completion Process provides customized independent stimulation of multiple pay zones, resulting in substantial time and cost savings. With EXcape® multiple perforating guns, isolation devices and hydraulic control lines are attached to the outside of the casing. The guns are located across targeted zones and the casing is cemented. Guns shoot through both walls of the casing and are selectively fired via control lines. Each firing actuates isolation devices to ensure isolation during stimulation of each zone. This procedure is repeated for subsequent intervals until all zones are completed.

The EXcape® method reduces/eliminates many traditional wireline, coiled tubing and regular tubing operations, thereby reducing completion time, minimizing HES exposure, and allowing wells to be turned to production immediately following stimulation.

STIMGUN®

AboutUs-TechnologyLogos-StimGunThe StimGun® family of propellant-based products provides the industry with fully integrated, technology-based tools to dynamically clean and stimulate the near wellbore. These stimulations are cost effective as a primary stimulation and in conjunction with other stimulation technologies such as hydraulic fracturing.

StimGun® overcomes formation damage created during perforation. The StimGun® assembly used in the Mara-Stim process employs a cylindrical sleeve of gas-generating propellant that is simply slid in place over the outside of conventional perforating guns. It can be run on wireline or in a tubing conveyed configuration. The propellant sleeve is ignited by the perforating charge and as the propellant sleeve burns, energetic gases are released sending high pressure shock waves through the casing and into the formation. This method of perforating does not crush the formation rock, therefore reducing formation damage.

Water Treatment

Marathon's advanced filtration technology removes sulfate ions from seawater prior to injection using sulfate removal technology (SRT) membranes.

Barium sulfate scaling can be a severe problem in deepwater operations. Such scaling results from the combination of sulfate ions in injection seawater and barium ions in formation waters. Removal of these scale accumulations can be extremely difficult and expensive. Treatment with scale-inhibitor chemicals on subsea well completions is nearly impossible, dramatically increasing the need for sulfate removal technology.

Marathon's SRT is used in 35 large projects worldwide. Projects (operators) include North Sea (Marathon, Statoil, Encana), Angola (BP, TFE, Chevron, ExxonMobil), Brazil (Petrobras, Shell), Equatorial Guinea (Hess) and the U.S. (Shell).
