Global Operations
Canada's oil sands will play a major role in meeting growing energy demand. Marathon owns interests in the Athabasca Oil Sands Project and in in-situ oil sands leases in Alberta.
Our United States operations cover regions throughout North America, including:
Marathon's base assets offshore the U.K. include the Brae Complex and the Foinaven Field.
We operate multiple licenses offshore in this strategic core area where we have significant liquids production. We continue to develop our Alvheim area, and are drilling exploration wells in selected blocks.
Marathon owns positions in four exploration blocks in the underexplored onshore Kurdistan Region of Iraq, which is an impact exploration entry for Marathon with significant resource potential per prospect.
Marathon is a member of the Waha Group, which acquired exploration and production rights in Libya in the mid-1950s. We have interests in the Waha Concessions in the prolific Sirte Basin.
Our gas liquids recovery operations and key base assets are the foundation of our Integrated Gas segment in Equatorial Guinea, where we also address health, social, education and other issues.
Development is proceeding in our offshore Angola growth asset, with first production planned in mid-2012 in Blocks 31 and 32, where 30 successful wells have been drilled.
The Company re-entered Gabon in 2012 with its interest in the Diaba license.
Marathon holds interests in two onshore exploration blocks in Kenya.
Marathon entered into an agreement in October 2012 to acquire a 20 percent working interest in the South Omo concession in Ethiopia, which has an area of approximately 1.5 million net acres (7.3 million gross).

Marathon Oil Corporation (NYSE:MRO) is an independent international exploration and production company. Based in Houston, Texas, the Company has activity in North America, Europe and Africa. The Company has three reportable operating segments, each of which is organized and managed based primarily upon geographic location and the nature of the products and services it offers. The three segments are as follows:
- North America Exploration and Production (E&P) – explores for, produces and markets liquid hydrocarbons and natural gas in North America.
- International E&P – explores for, produces and markets liquid hydrocarbons and natural gas outside of North America and produces and markets products manufactured from natural gas, such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) and methanol in Equatorial Guinea.
- Oil Sands Mining – mines, extracts and transports bitumen from oil sands deposits in Alberta, Canada, and upgrades the bitumen to produce and market synthetic crude oil and vacuum gas oil.
