Global Operations

Global:

Exploration and Production
Integrated Gas
Oil Sands Mining
Social Responsibility

Marathon’s exploration activities are focused on adding profitable production to existing core areas and developing potential new core areas throughout the world.

Marathon’s production operations supply liquid hydrocarbons and natural gas to the growing world energy markets. Worldwide production operations are currently focused in North America, Africa and Europe. The Company also holds ownership interests in both operated and outside-operated oil sands leases in Canada that could be developed using in-situ methods of extraction.

Marathon’s integrated gas strategy is adding value through the development of opportunities created by the demand for natural gas. Integrated gas complements Marathon’s exploration and production operations and opens a wide array of strategic investment opportunities designed to add sustainable value growth.

Integrated gas transforms natural gas resources into a range of downstream products including liquefied natural gas (LNG), ultra-clean fuels, special lubricants produced by gas-to-liquids (GTL) technologies and petrochemical feedstocks such as methanol. Gas may be used to generate power for local markets as well.

Marathon owns a 20 percent outside-operated interest in the Athabasca Oil Sands Project (AOSP), which includes the Muskeg River and Jackpine mines, the Scotford Upgrader and over 215,000 acres of potentially mineable land in Alberta, Canada. This asset gives Marathon access to stable, long-lived Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) production that will be increased through several phased expansions over the next decade.

The AOSP is a joint venture between Marathon Oil Canada (20 percent), Shell Canada Energy (60 percent) and Chevron Canada Limited (20 percent). Shell is the operator.
