To develop a qualified workforce for our Canadian oil sands assets, Marathon and our AOSP partners have developed a relationship with Keyano College. Keyano provides workforce development programs to under-represented demographic groups such as aboriginals, immigrants and visible minorities in Canada.
The AOSP partners have a three-year commitment to support the college's environmental technology and aboriginal entrepreneurship certificate programs, safety induction center, new campus at Fort Chipewyan and other initiatives.
The Athabasca Oil Sands Project (AOSP) is advancing the Quest Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Project to capture, transport, inject and store more than one million tonnes of CO2 annually. CO2 would be:
The AOSP has conducted studies and drilled test wells to outline development options for Quest. Several additional years of work are still needed before a final capital investment decision is taken on Quest. That investment decision will ultimately depend on a range of factors, including the outcome of a structured consultation process, the results of appraisal activities and detailed integrated studies, as well as the ability to meet all regulatory requirements. Construction would only begin after all of these aspects have been addressed successfully, with the aim to start operations in 2015.
The appeal of CCS stems from the technical feasibility of implementing large-scale projects, thereby starting to address the emissions of the existing base of large CO2 emitters.
The experience gained locally through early implementation of CCS projects such as Quest will prove invaluable in developing the capability and the capacity to enable industrial facilities to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
