Social Responsibility

As with any Marathon operation, we believe that the right to operate in Equatorial Guinea is a privilege. We strive to be a good neighbor by providing sustainable benefits to local communities and by incorporating economic, environmental and social codes of conduct into our business activities.

In 2003, Marathon, in collaboration with its business partners, the government of Equatorial Guinea, and international non-profit and research organizations, launched a $15.8 million effort to reduce the transmission of malaria on Bioko Island. The innovative approach to malaria eradication goes beyond focusing on a single cause and addresses the numerous and diverse factors leading to malaria transmission. Other examples of our community involvement include:

  • Medicines
  • Donations to civil foundations and communities
  • Support of appropriate infrastructure projects
  • Support and participation in national events and local cultural celebrations

Marathon recognizes that the true value of the Company's relationship with Equatorial Guinea can only be realized over time by providing opportunities for Equatoguineans. A commitment to this dimension of our partnership for progress can be seen in our educational initiatives to build capacity at all levels:

  • English language training
  • Undergraduate training programs in the United States at La Roche College and Texas A&M University
  • Vocational training for administrative, technical and operational positions

Marathon will continue these efforts in support of our goal of being a responsible member of the local community and a partner in progress for a better Equatorial Guinea.
