Marathon is committed to high standards of Health, Environmental, Safety and Security (HES&S) performance. Our HES&S policy, management systems and other policies provide the framework employees need to create a safe work environment and protect the communities and environment in which we operate.
In 2010, the HES&S focus areas were process safety, personal safety, operating risk assessment, environmental performance and emergency preparedness. Existing safety training and other programs aimed at preventing incidents and injuries continued. Marathon issued its HES&S Beliefs and reinforced employees' right and obligation to stop work if they have safety concerns.
A risk-based decision-making process was implemented to assess, prioritize and manage specific operating risks consistently across the Company. A Risk Calibration Standard is used to set risk ranking, associated risk response and approval authority.
Approximately 275 employees participated in the Company's annual emergency preparedness drill in August. The purpose of the drill was to thoroughly review Marathon's Emergency Preparedness Policy and response plans and practice roles and responsibilities to assure effective execution in the event of an incident. Contractors and state and federal regulators joined Marathon in the two-day drill.
Based on an analysis of safety and environmental incidents, in 2011 Marathon will continue strengthening process safety with a focus on operating procedures and mechanical integrity. Training programs at all levels are ongoing to raise awareness and skills for proper job planning, hazard recognition and other activities that contribute to safe operations.
Marathon’s commitment to the community is deeply rooted in our core values. Our employee-run Books for Bioko program collects supplies for schools in Equatorial Guinea.
