James L. Bowzer is vice president of North American Production Operations for Marathon Oil Corporation. He has responsibility for production and exploration activities including unconventional plays in the Bakken, Niobrara, Anadarko Woodford and Canadian heavy oil. He is also responsible for Marathon’s conventional assets located in Alaska, Colorado, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Texas and Wyoming.
Mr. Bowzer earned a bachelor of science degree in petroleum engineering from the University of Wyoming and completed the Advanced Management Program from the Graduate School of Business at Indiana University.
Mr. Bowzer assumed his current responsibilities in 2008. Previously, he held the position of regional vice president, International Production. As such, he was responsible for managing Marathon’s international assets in Europe and Africa, which included the United Kingdom, Ireland, Norway, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Libya and Angola. In February 2004, he was appointed general manager of Corporate Strategic Planning. Preceding this assignment, he was named business manager of the Rocky Mountain Region and later the Mid-Continent Region in 2000. Mr. Bowzer spent his early career in various engineering positions working fractured reservoir systems where he co-authored SPE papers and was awarded a patent on an enhanced oil recovery process in fractured reservoirs. He began his career with the Company in 1982 as a field engineer in Cody, Wyoming.
Mr. Bowzer has served the industry and communities throughout his career. In addition to serving as Marathon’s executive director of United Way, he has served on the board of directors for Junior Achievement, California Conservation Commission, Petroleum Association of Wyoming, and New Mexico Oil & Gas Association, the Independent Petroleum Association of America and on the Upstream Committee for the American Petroleum Institute.
In March of 2012, Mr. Bowzer was appointed by Governor Matt Mead to serve on the Board of Directors for the University of Wyoming, School of Energy Resources.
