A Compass for Success

Surya Rajan is a completions engineer in Marathon's North America Production Operations. His current assignment is to get natural gas wells in Mimms Creek in East Texas producing quickly and safely.

"The role of a completions engineer is to determine the most cost-effective and efficient means of connecting the oil or natural gas in the reservoir to the well that has been drilled. It is a very carefully orchestrated series of events that turns what is essentially a hole in the ground into a producing well. Everything has to fall right into place or there is a domino effect of delays that result in lost revenue.

"The way we complete wells is very much influenced by Marathon's corporate values. First and foremost, we focus on safety and environmental stewardship. I have to do my job in a responsible and safe manner, or I shouldn't be doing the job.

"We also have a clear compass. Marathon leadership is consistent in terms of our strategy, vision and direction. In my day-to-day work, having a clear picture of where Marathon is headed helps me make the right decision for the situation. This enables me to ensure my work is growing value for Marathon."
