Unconventional Asset Development

Chris Cooper leads Marathon's Powder River Basin asset team in Houston, Texas, and field operations in Wyoming. Powder River was the Company's entry into coal bed methane operations and Chris' team is responsible for its continued development.

"Powder River is an unconventional asset that produces natural gas from very shallow coal deposits. Unconventional assets like Powder River and the Bakken shale in North Dakota present Marathon with the opportunity to gain a strategic advantage through the application of our advanced Technology. That's good from a shareholder perspective, but also from an industry and regional perspective as Marathon works to meet the increasing demand for energy.

"My team is responsible for delivering value through ongoing development of the Powder River asset. We identify and execute new opportunities and manage day-to-day operations. Controlling costs and complying with environmental regulations are a key part of our operations, but our top priority is safety. Marathon's goal is to be the safest operator in the Powder River Basin.

"It takes special skills to operate unconventional assets. We are developing and applying those skills in our Powder River team, and we are taking the asset to a new level. For me, developing people is the best legacy because it will have such a long-term impact on Marathon. If you are willing to learn and are committed to meeting the goals of the business, you will have a challenging and rewarding career in Marathon."
