Supporting cancer education, awareness and research

MOC-KomenRacefortheCure-Cancer-Awareness

With enthusiastic volunteer support from our employees, Marathon Oil assists non-profit organizations and academic research dedicated to fighting cancer.

For the seventh consecutive year, Marathon is proud to be the Local Presenting Sponsor of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® Houston on Oct. 1 in downtown Houston. The organization, dedicated to education and research about breast cancer causes, treatment and the search for a cure, expects 35,000 participants, including approximately 2,000 breast cancer survivors, and hopes to raise $4 million.

Komen Houston has funded more than $25 million to local programs in its seven county service area and $8 million for national breast cancer research.

While our employees volunteer their time to help Houston's largest footrace run smoothly, Marathon has also provided board support and funding.

Marathon is also the Presenting Partner for the Tex US TOO Dad's Day 5K Run and Walk in Houston benefitting prostate cancer education and awareness. Us TOO International is a grassroots organization with a network of 325 support group chapters worldwide. It provides men and their families with free information, materials and peer-to-peer support so they can make informed choices on detection, treatment options and coping with ongoing survivorship.

Through Active Against Cancer (Aktiv Mot Kreft), Marathon employees in Norway raise money to buy cancer equipment for hospitals while improving their health. Employees receive points for physical activity data they record on the foundation's website. The points are converted into monetary donations from Marathon to Active Against Cancer. The more employees run, swim and enjoy other fitness activities, the more money we donate to the foundation.

Active Against Cancer was founded by the late Norwegian champion marathon runner Grete Waitz. The foundation is a natural fit for our Norway operations, a donor to Stavanger University Hospital's breast cancer research program and the Stavanger marathon.

Marathon promotes healthy, productive communities throughout our operations as part of our business strategy. We continue to seek innovative non-profit programs that align with our business goals, broad objectives and strategies.
