HIGH OPERATING Reliability PAYING DIVIDENDS

News Spotlight Series Upstream Reliability_v2

High operating reliability is central to Marathon's ability to profitably grow production. Since 2009, we have seen a direct linkage between this key aspect of operational excellence and increased production and revenues. In 2010, we had 94 percent operational reliability across our major company operated assets.

Marathon's Equatorial Guinea LNG (EGLNG) facility operational availability was 97.2 percent in 2010, compared to 95.5 percent in the prior year. High reliability, coupled with innovative process optimization in 2009 and 2010, increased gross production to 3.75 million metric tonnes of LNG in 2010. Through the first quarter of 2011, EGLNG achieved 100 percent operational availability.

Marathon operated the Alba Field and Alba liquefied petroleum gas plant at 92.1 percent operational availability in 2010, and 99.4 percent in the first quarter of 2011.This world-class operation continues to provide significant production rates for Marathon and our partners.

In the Alvheim Development Area offshore Norway, overall reliability has exceeded expectations since start-up in June 2008. Improved reliability, combined with debottlenecking work, has increased the gross throughput capacity of the asset's floating production, storage and offloading vessel (FPSO) to 142 thousand barrels of oil per day (mbopd), up from the original design of 120 mbopd.

Alvheim's 2010 performance of 91.8 percent operational availability was in the top quartile for North Sea assets according to McKinsey & Company's annual benchmarking survey. First quarter 2011 operational availability performance achieved 95.5 percent.

The Brae complex ranked number one in production efficiency according to the 2010 McKinsey analysis of assets in the U.K. North Sea. Marathon achieved 92.5 percent operational availability in 2010, and 92.9 percent in the first quarter of 2011.

Marathon attained 98.3 and 99.5 percent operational availability reliability in our Gulf of Mexico and Alaska assets, respectively, in 2010. The first quarter of 2011 has seen performance of 97.0 and 100 percent for these operations.
