Employees and contractors at our Brae platform add profitable production from the North Sea. Other core regions include the U.S., Canada and Equatorial Guinea.

Unconventional oil and natural gas resources with outstanding potential are a strategic growth area for Marathon. With more than 2.1 million net acres in resource plays across North America and Europe, Marathon Oil is poised to maximize reserve and production growth from liquids-rich resource plays.
Marathon's North American assets provide low-risk, scalable and profitable growth. Since November 2010, Marathon has captured a top-five acreage position in the core of the Eagle Ford Shale in South Texas, one of the premier resource plays in the U.S. Marathon is also active in the North Dakota Bakken, Oklahoma Anadarko Woodford and emerging Niobrara play in Colorado and Wyoming. In addition to these areas, Marathon holds an in-situ oil sands acreage position in Alberta, Canada.
In Poland, Marathon is the operator of 11 concessions totaling approximately 1.2 million net acres (2.3 million gross). Marathon was an early entrant in Poland, targeting the promising Lower Paleozoic shale gas objective, similar to many North American plays.
Throughout the various resource plays, Marathon is applying expertise developed in the Bakken Shale oil play. Since acquiring the Bakken assets in 2006, Marathon has developed specific competencies to address environmental, infrastructure, regulatory, geologic, drilling and completion challenges in shale plays. Drilling time has been halved and proactive environmental practices have been implemented in sensitive areas of the Bakken located on federal and tribal lands.
Marathon’s commitment to the community is deeply rooted in our core values. Our employee-run Books for Bioko program collects supplies for schools in Equatorial Guinea.
