Marathon strives to reduce our environmental impacts, and address concerns about climate change and its potential effects, while expanding our operations to meet growing global demand for energy. Our efforts include programs for using natural resources efficiently, reducing emissions and improving energy efficiency.
As Marathon expands operations to meet the increasing demand for energy, our emissions will increase. Our goal is to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity (emissions per unit of throughput or production) even as our business grows.
Marathon believes that addressing concerns about climate change and GHG emissions reductions will require global solutions. These include transparent and equitable government policies, innovative and cost-effective technologies, and energy efficiency.
Marathon uses environmental metrics to measure performance and identify opportunities for improvement. Spills are a principal environmental performance indicator due to their potential impacts on the environment.
To prevent spills and discharges, we provide employee training, procedures, preventive maintenance, equipment inspections and mechanical safeguards. We investigate spills and discharges to identify their cause and take incident-specific and, if necessary, broad corrective actions.
Marathon recognizes the importance of water stewardship and that fresh water is a valuable natural resource. We are assessing our water footprint and stewardship issues. Business units assess water use with a Company-wide inventory process. During project planning, business units incorporate water usage into risk assessments to enhance consideration of water aspects in our business decision-making and planning processes.

Marathon’s commitment to the community is deeply rooted in our core values. Our employee-run Books for Bioko program collects supplies for schools in Equatorial Guinea.
