Responsible Care®

Responsible Care® is the chemical industry's commitment to the continual improvement of environmental, health, safety and security performance. Since 1988, companies participating in the program have reduced emissions 70 percent while increasing production 25 percent. Additionally, the incidence of worker injury and illness among Responsible Care companies has declined 51 percent since 1990.

Marathon was the first, and one of only a few refining companies, to adopt Responsible Care® in 2000 as part of a partnership program between the National Petrochemical & Refiners Association (NPRA) and the American Chemical Council (ACC). In recognition of its efforts, Marathon received the NPRA's inaugural Responsible Care® Exemplary Recognition Award in 2002, which was established to honor the corporation that best demonstrated comprehensive and pioneering work in Responsible Care. In 2003, Marathon was again presented with this prestigious award.

To further its involvement in Responsible Care, Marathon's Downstream business recently became a member of the American Chemistry Council (ACC). The Company is now in the process of implementing the Responsible Care Management System® and publicly reporting its annual performance metrics. Marathon's Detroit, Michigan, refinery was the first refinery in the U.S. to be certified to meet the requirements of RCI 14001 (a combination of the Responsible Care Management System and ISO 14001). The Company's other facilities are currently implementing the management system. As a member of ACC, Marathon's Downstream headquarters and a sample of its facilities must receive third-party certification of their management system by December 31, 2010.

As a Responsible Care® company, Marathon pledges to operate its business in accordance with the Responsible Care Guiding Principles.
