Methamphetamine Awareness and Education

Methamphetamine abuse has become a global threat. With over 25 million addicts worldwide, meth claims more users than both cocaine and heroine combined. The situation in the U.S. is no exception. Methamphetamine users also have the highest rates of addiction and habitual relapse, and the devastating health effects with prolonged use can be fatal. In addition, meth places a tremendous social burden on communities, such as increased violent crime, theft, domestic violence, child abuse, pollution and environmental hazards from meth production.

Marathon became involved in methamphetamine awareness through engagement with local and state elected leaders in the communities where the Company has operations. Meth use was frequently identified as the most serious social challenge in their communities. To address the issue, Marathon partnered with local leaders to create an awareness and education program, first targeted at employees and contractors, and later the wider community.

In 2006, Marathon presented the program for the first time to local employees. The response was overwhelming, and at the urging of employees and community leaders, Marathon expanded the presentation to schools and communities. The momentum has continued and as of July 2008 the program has reached approximately 13,500 people across six states.

In recognition of Marathon's work in substance abuse prevention, the Company was awarded the Starfish Award in 2007, by the State of Wyoming, where the program was launched. The awareness program is continuing with outreach throughout Marathon's U.S. operations. Marathon plans to extend its commitment to this cause by developing a strategic Corporate Meth Alliance to involve additional industry and regional partners.
