Marathon's business is rooted in Living Our Values, a philosophy encompassing longstanding commitments to health and safety, environmental stewardship, honesty and integrity, corporate citizenship and a high performance team culture.
In this period of appropriately heightened concern for environmental, safety, geopolitical and work- place risks, Marathon has been intensifying efforts to address our corporate social responsibility. The drive to optimize shareholders' economic value is complemented, and supported, by the theme Living Our Values, acknowledging a central role for non-financial performance.
Public companies' appraisal of such results is not yet as formalized as financial accounting, but we believe that it should incorporate ambitious targets, substantive metrics and candid reports on how a business measures up to its own sense of duty to varied constituencies.
Our Company has transitioned CSR reporting to a well-established ESGW framework, and through this structure this report presents Marathon's achievements and aspirations for continuous improvement.
The Board of Directors, its Public Policy Committee, and management, together, have sought to determine meaningful measures of what has been and will be accomplished, to identify emerging CSR risks and opportunities, and to articulate challenging objectives for which we can hold ourselves accountable.
The constraints are clear - where the Company operates, the technologies employed, the increasing demand for our products, for example - but we trust Marathon's stakeholders will agree that our CSR reports, record and goals reflect a fundamental emphasis on the Company's stewardship responsibilities.
