Environmental Stewardship
Marathon endeavors to reduce environmental impacts and address concerns of climate change and its potential effects. Our environmental stewardship efforts include programs for efficient use of natural resources, reducing emissions, improving energy efficiency, and investing in new technologies.
Where We Are
- Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions decreased approximately 2 percent from 2008.
- Participating in voluntary programs such as U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Natural Gas STAR and ENERGY STAR® programs, the Global Gas Flaring Reduction (GGFR) initiative, and public reporting programs such as Carbon Disclosure Project.
- Established corporate policy statement on energy efficiency.
- Spill volumes decreased in 2009, primarily due to reliability and pipeline integrity programs.
- Implementing asset-specific biodiversity efforts including Wildlife Habitat Council site certifications and the Colorado River Initiative.
Where We Want To Be
- Reducing GHG emissions intensity 4 percent by 2013.
- Improving energy efficiency 5 percent by 2015.
- Enhancing environmental performance by reducing spills and releases, minimizing wastes, and promoting conservation and biodiversity.
What We Are Doing To Get There
Marathon’s commitment to the community is deeply rooted in our core values. Our employee-run Books for Bioko program collects supplies for schools in Equatorial Guinea.
