Energy Efficiency
As part of our energy security strategy, we focus on improving operational and energy efficiency to:
- Use less fuel
- Conserve resources
- Reduce costs
- Extend asset life
- Aid in reducing GHG emissions and intensity
While more than 70 percent of Marathon's energy use comes from operating our refineries, they are among the most energy efficient in the U.S. Marathon is continuing work to improve energy efficiency at least 1 percent per year by 2015. Potential obstacles to achieving this goal include:
- Lower refinery utilization
- New regulations that require extra processing equipment
- Additional energy requirements for maturing oil and gas fields
2009 Results
In 2009, we appointed a corporate team to centralize ongoing, facility-based operational energy efficiency efforts. This team established targets and identified future efficiency projects.
Business units in 2009 implemented projects that improved energy efficiency by approximately 1 percent. Improvements included bringing more energy to market by reducing flaring and venting, and lowering energy use. In 2009, Marathon reduced energy use by approximately 0.4 percent, contributing to the Company's overall energy efficiency improvement.
