Employees and contractors at our Brae platform add profitable production from the North Sea. Other core regions include the U.S., Canada and Equatorial Guinea.

Causes of oil spills include the integrity of equipment and infrastructure, human error and weather. To prevent spills, Marathon provides training, procedures, preventive maintenance, equipment inspections and mechanical safeguards. We investigate spills to identify their causes and take corrective actions to prevent future recurrence.
Effective in 2009, Marathon standardized internal oil spill reporting. All business units now internally report all oil spills equal to or greater than 1 barrel and all agency reportable spills regardless of size. The total volume spilled in 2009 (2,272 barrels) was approximately 75 percent less than 2008. However, the change in reporting resulted in an increase in the number of spills reported in 2009 compared to 2008.
Six spills (each more than 100 barrels) accounted for 84 percent of the total volume spilled in 2009. The largest incident occurred at the Canton, Ohio, refinery, where 672 barrels of asphalt spilled as a result of tank maintenance. All material was retained within the tank containment area and cleaned up. The facility is upgrading equipment and improving technology to help prevent tank overfills.
Marathon’s commitment to the community is deeply rooted in our core values. Our employee-run Books for Bioko program collects supplies for schools in Equatorial Guinea.
