Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Improving emissions intensity 4 percent

We believe that addressing concerns about climate change will require global solutions that implement transparent and equitable government policies, employ innovative and cost-effective technologies, and promote energy efficiency.

Using carbon-based fuels generates greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs). Yet, carbon-based fuels will be required in increasing amounts to meet the world's growing demand for energy.

Marathon's goal is to improve GHG emissions per unit of throughput or production (intensity) 4 percent by 2013 (based on a 2008 baseline). During this time, we will continue to grow our business, which may require expanded or additional capacity, increased drilling and production, and higher energy usage. Marathon will strive to use energy efficiently and manage GHG emissions intensity.

2009 Results

In 2009, Marathon implemented a corporate strategy to reduce our carbon emissions through mitigation opportunities, carbon offsets and investments in renewable energy.

We also appointed an employee as a director to oversee climate change and carbon management, and continued our participation in voluntary emission reduction programs.

Marathon reduced total GHG emissions from operations approximately 2 percent from 2008. Reductions were due to asset divestitures, along with effects of energy efficiency projects and continuous improvements in data accuracy.

Upstream's GHG intensity rate was reduced 13.7 percent, related to asset sales and a full year of production from Norway operations. Downstream's intensity rate increased 0.5 percent, mainly due to lower refinery throughput. We expect improvements in GHG intensity in Downstream, driven by the Garyville, Louisiana, expansion project.
