Employees and contractors at our Brae platform add profitable production from the North Sea. Other core regions include the U.S., Canada and Equatorial Guinea.

Marathon's workforce included 28,855 employees at year-end 2009, primarily in the U.S. Approximately 18,000 of these were SSA personnel, most of whom worked at the Company's retail marketing outlets.
The 2009 U.S. turnover rate (excluding SSA employees) was 4.8 percent, compared to 6.2 percent in 2008. Outside the U.S., the turnover rate was 5.5 percent, compared to 6.2 percent in 2008. Turnover among all SSA employees was approximately 84 percent, compared to 128 percent in 2008.
Marathon promotes open, honest communication in the workplace. Our grievance system provides many options for reporting and settling differences without fear of retaliation. We encourage employees first to work directly with their supervisor to resolve issues. Confidential assistance is also available from local Human Resources consultants, the Integrity Helpline and Marathon's ombudsman.
Marathon conducts periodic surveys to assess employee satisfaction and engagement, an indicator of employees' level of commitment to their work and company. Engagement is associated with company performance, customer satisfaction, job turnover, absenteeism and other key metrics. We believe an engaged workforce ultimately works more effectively, which makes Marathon a more competitive, safer and better place to work.
Our 2009 employee survey showed engagement levels well above our industry comparison group. Employees rated ethics and integrity, health and safety, teamwork and diversity as strengths, and reward and recognition, resource availability and strategic direction as areas that need improvement.
Based on the results, we will identify trends and themes, develop action plans to address specific issues, build on strengths and continuously engage employees.
Marathon’s commitment to the community is deeply rooted in our core values. Our employee-run Books for Bioko program collects supplies for schools in Equatorial Guinea.
