Emergency Preparedness

Marathon is strengthening our capacity to protect employees, communities and the environment.

We maintain extensive emergency preparedness and response capabilities. Following the Deepwater Horizon and industry pipeline incidents in 2010, we began taking steps to further strengthen our plans and processes for preventing and responding to large-scale events.

With our priority on reducing risk, and operational focus on preventing loss of well control, we reviewed our well and pipeline integrity programs and participated in industry work groups assessing related issues.

Marathon is active in efforts to strengthen overall industry capabilities for a deepwater source event. We co-founded the Helix Well Containment Group (HWCG), a consortium which is developing a comprehensive and rapid deepwater containment response system in the U.S.

Marathon hosted HWCG's first tabletop drill and has held other exercises to continuously improve our ability to respond effectively. In Europe, we participated in development of deepwater well containment equipment to be stored in Southampton, U.K.

In addition, we increased our response capacity. We now have membership in three large and multiple small oil spill response organizations (OSROs) covering the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean regions.

Outside of the U.S., our internal response is complemented by a global membership in the world's largest oil spill response cooperative and other OSROs. We also participate in mutual aid agreements in Equatorial Guinea, the U.K., Libya and Indonesia.

Marathon formed and trained an internal team of deepwater drilling and source control experts focused on preventing and responding to deepwater well control events. We shared this model with fellow members of HWCG.

Our Corporate Emergency Response Team (CERT) has expanded. We now have approximately 900 trained incident command responders worldwide. The 2010 CERT exercise scenario involved a large-scale, complex Gulf of Mexico incident. Federal and state agency representatives participated in the two-day exercise alongside 150 Marathon employees and executives.

Marathon will continuously improve the plans and organizational skills that underpin our prevention, preparedness and response capabilities. We believe the Company and the industry are targeting the right issues to address offshore and pipeline safety responsibly and effectively so that we can continue meeting our customers' energy needs.
