biodiversity and ecosystem services

Biodiversity and ecosystem services are key opportunities for improvement for Marathon.

Water Stewardship

Marathon recognizes the importance of water stewardship and that fresh water is a valuable natural resource. In 2010, we established an executive-level steering committee to oversee Marathon's strategy and actions related to water. The committee, along with identified Company water experts, held an internal workshop to review water stewardship efforts.

In recent years and under our commitment to the American Chemistry Council's Responsible Care® initiative, Marathon began reporting water use from our refineries. In addition, Marathon:

  • Estimated our corporate water footprint (withdrawal, consumption and discharge).
  • Began developing Company-wide inventory protocols and processes for water-related information.
  • Is evaluating means to strengthen water use assessment in our existing management systems.
  • Is developing local surveillance and sharing best practices.
  • Is identifying key business risks and opportunities related to water use.

Environmental Impact Assessments

To minimize our impact on the environment, Marathon is conducting environmental impact assessments (EIAs) as part of our entry into Poland and the Iraqi Kurdistan Region. This process includes investigations of plant and animal populations, ecosystem structures, preservation and continuity of habitat, and water resources. Our findings will guide risk management and mitigation, protection measures and other initiatives.

Preserving Wildlife Habitats in Wyoming

We work with stakeholders to identify biodiversity enhancement projects that have strategic value for Marathon and meaningful, positive effects on our operating areas. For example, in Wyoming, Marathon supports non-profit organizations and academic projects aimed at wildlife habitat preservation and restoration, invasive species control, water resource development and similar regional challenges. We are involved in projects with The Nature Conservancy, the University of Wyoming Renewable Resources Department, Wildlife Heritage Foundation of Wyoming, National Wild Turkey Federation and others.

In 2010, our Wyoming asset team was active in interdisciplinary working groups focused on protecting irrigable lands and threatened species, reducing environmental impacts, advocating multiple uses of public lands and beneficial use of produced water.
