Barrels of oil equivalent (BOE)
A unit of measure to quantify crude oil and natural gas amounts using the same basis. Natural gas volumes are converted to BOE on a basis of 6,000:1 (standard cubic feet to BOE).
Biodiversity
Refers broadly to the variety of life on earth at the genetic, species and ecosystem levels; includes the processes that link these together and enable them to function.
Capacity building
Establishing mechanisms that allow communities (or nations) to develop and sustain themselves through their own human capital.
Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP)
Independent not-for-profit organization that holds the world's largest database of corporate climate change information, obtained from voluntary responses to annual information requests and available to the global marketplace.
Condensate
A natural gas liquid recovered from associated and nonassociated gas wells from lease separators or field facilities.
Corporate social responsibility (CSR)
The concept that organizations, especially corporations, have an obligation to consider the interests of customers, employees, shareholders, communities and the environment in all aspects of their operations.
Criteria pollutants
A total of seven common air pollutants, six of which are regulated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency through the Clean Air Act's National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS): ozone, particulate matter (PM), carbon monoxide (CO), oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and sulfur (SOx), and lead. The seventh, volatile organic compounds (VOC), is a precursor to ozone.
Energy efficiency
The result of reducing energy use and/or conserving resources through reductions in flaring and venting hydrocarbons.
Energy STAR®
A joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy offering a proven energy management strategy that helps in measuring current energy performance, setting goals, tracking savings, and rewarding improvements.
Energy use
Total energy (fuel, electricity and steam) consumed in the operation of equipment and/or buildings minus any energy exported.
Exploration
The process of searching for minerals, such as oil and gas, that enables an oil or gas company to determine whether to proceed with development and production. Exploration activities include geophysical surveys, drilling to locate an oil or gas reservoir, and drilling additional wells after a discovery to determine the boundaries of an underground reservoir.
Flaring
The burning of natural gas, including associated gas from oil production.
Flowback fluid
Fracturing fluid and naturally occurring substances that flow back up the borehole to the surface after pressure is decreased during hydraulic fracturing.
Global Gas Flaring Reduction (GGFR)
A World Bank public-private partnership supporting the efforts of oil producing countries and companies to increase the use of associated natural gas and thus reduce flaring and venting.
Global Performance System (GPS)
Marathon management system that provides a formal framework to fulfill the Upstream business' commitment to HES performance, security and social responsibility. The GPS has core elements that are internationally recognized as key components of best practice management systems that drive business excellence.
Greenhouse gases (GHG)
Gases in the atmosphere that absorb and emit radiation within the thermal infrared range and may consequently contribute to global warming. For Marathon's reporting purposes, GHGs are four gases listed in the Kyoto Protocol and which are relevant to oil and gas activities: carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O) and sulfur hexafluoride (SF6).
Human rights
Basic standards of treatment to which all people are entitled, regardless of nationality, gender, race, economic status or religion.
Hydraulic fracturing
A proven technology to help produce oil and natural gas trapped in shale formations. It involves pumping a mixture of water, sand and chemicals into underground rock layers where oil or gas is trapped. The pressure of the water creates fissures in the rock. The sand holds open the fissures, allowing the oil or gas to escape and flow up the well.
Indigenous peoples
Those peoples whose social, cultural, political and economic conditions differentiate them from the dominant societal and community sectors that have developed around them.
Natural Gas STAR
A U.S. Environmental Protection Agency voluntary partnership that encourages U.S. and international oil and natural gas companies to adopt proven, cost-effective technologies and practices that improve operational efficiency and reduce emissions of methane.
Near miss
An unplanned or uncontrolled event or chain of events that has not resulted in recordable injury, illness, physical damage or environmental damage, but had the potential to do so in other circumstances.
Non-governmental organization (NGO)
An organization that is independent from the government, generally a nonprofit organization devoted to providing assistance to or advancing a particular cause or issue.
Normalization
The ratio of a quantitative output (e.g., emissions) to an aggregated measure of another output (e.g., barrels of oil produced or refinery throughput).
Process safety
A systematic approach to ensuring the safe containment of hazardous materials or energy by applying good design, construction and operating principles.
Process safety event
A recordable loss of primary containment that results in a hydrocarbon release, fire, explosion or other catastrophic event.
Produced water
Water that is brought to the surface during production of hydrocarbons.
Production
A generic industry term that refers to operations and activities involved in bringing oil and resources to the earth's surface, as well as initial processing.
Reclaimed waste
Wastes from an industrial or commercial process that are not sold as products or disposed as wastes but are reused, recycled or otherwise recovered for beneficial use.
Reserves
Reserves consist of oil, gas and bitumen considered producible under existing economic and operating conditions.
Responsible Care Management System®
American Chemistry Council's integrated management system to drive results in community awareness and emergency response, distribution, employee health and safety, pollution prevention, process safety and product stewardship.
Retail marketing
A generic industry term that refers to the retail sales of petroleum products, including gasoline service stations and convenience stores. In this Report, "Retail Marketing" (or "Retail") refers to Speedway.
Spill to the environment
Any unintended release of liquids or solids associated with current operation, from primary containment or secondary containment, into the environment.
Stakeholders
Those who affect, are affected by, or have an interest in the Company's performance.
Transparency
The level of openness a company or government has concerning how it makes and spends its money.
Venting
The controlled release of gases, usually natural gas or other hydrocarbon vapors, in the atmosphere.
Voluntary Protection Program (VPP)
U.S. Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) program that promotes effective worksite-based safety and health. Management, labor and OSHA establish cooperative relationships at workplaces that have implemented a comprehensive safety and health management system. Approval into VPP is OSHA's official recognition of exemplary occupational safety and health achieved by employers and employees. Participants are reevaluated every three to five years, with incident rates reviewed annually.
Waste
Material (solid or liquid) intended to be disposed of, reused, recycled or recovered either on site or off site that is the result of company operations.
Marathon’s commitment to the community is deeply rooted in our core values. Our employee-run Books for Bioko program collects supplies for schools in Equatorial Guinea.
