Employees and contractors at our Brae platform add profitable production from the North Sea. Other core regions include the U.S., Canada and Equatorial Guinea.

Marathon conducts business within broad social-political contexts. Respecting the human, cultural and legal rights of individuals and communities where we operate is crucial. We promote the United Nations (U.N.) Universal Declaration of Human Rights through active and committed participation in the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights.
Responsible operations and business practices help us manage risks, foster a positive business climate, improve stakeholder relations and gain access to global resources. Our goal is to respect the human rights of all stakeholders and raise awareness of related issues across the business enterprise. Our challenge is to ensure that employees, business partners, security forces and others are aware of our expectations.
Human rights training remains integral to our implementation of the Voluntary Principles. Face-to-face training is mandatory for Marathon employees, managers, security personnel and key contractor supervisory personnel in appropriate locations. An abbreviated version in local languages is available for security personnel in some locations. Training was conducted in Indonesia and Libya in 2010 and will be repeated in Equatorial Guinea in 2011.
To promote security and human rights with suppliers, language associated with the Voluntary Principles is a standard component of all commercial supply agreements.
In the Iraqi Kurdistan Region, Marathon is working with the government and several oil companies on phased development of a standard industry agreement for security forces that would include expectations related to the Voluntary Principles.
Building good community relationships is essential to Marathon's security strategy. We work to identify and address community concerns so they do not become security issues. This helps us fulfill our responsibility as an operator to safeguard employees, assets and communities and to business continuity.
Marathon provides security risk assessments, loss prevention strategies, site security and preparedness drills for all our facilities. In addition, we implement security plans, resources, audits and reviews as needed. We strive to maintain safe and secure operations while fully respecting human rights and fundamental freedoms, and follow the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights to accomplish this.
Marathon’s commitment to the community is deeply rooted in our core values. Our employee-run Books for Bioko program collects supplies for schools in Equatorial Guinea.
