Process Safety

Safely managing Marathon's operational processes is fundamental in reducing the risk of a potentially catastrophic fire or other process incident. We seek to ensure process safety worldwide by implementing Marathon's PSM standard.

We collect and evaluate leading indicators of process safety performance. Indicators include critical equipment maintenance, training, addressing process safety-related recommendations, and quality of management of change. In addition, we apply reliability standards for equipment maintenance and safe operation, and provide metrics to monitor asset integrity.

Our PSM program tracks process safety events and near misses, and uses knowledge gained in incident investigations to target prevention efforts and corrective actions. Marathon PSM-regulated and voluntary sites had nine Tier 1 PSEs such as hydrocarbon and chemical releases in 2010, compared to 14 in 2009.

Incident data and audit findings indicate that we need to continue improving mechanical integrity and operating procedures. Findings from our tiered audit program and from regulators in countries where we operate are also used to improve performance in this area.

Marathon implemented a decision-making process in 2010 to systematically assess, prioritize and manage specific operating risks across the Company. This Risk Calibration Tool is used to set risk ranking, associated risk response and approval authority. Used in concert with our management systems, Enterprise Risk Management and other processes, the tool assures that the appropriate management levels assess and make decisions related to specific operational risks.
