Marathon is building a diverse workforce because we believe a variety of ideas, opinions and problem-solving styles leads to stronger solutions and better performance. Our goal is to recruit, hire and promote the most qualified candidates while diversifying our workforce, and to ensure that training and development opportunities are available to further enhance the diversity composition in professional and managerial positions.
One of our challenges is recruiting and retaining new and experienced professionals to meet our needs for specific skills in technical fields. Our recruiting strategy focuses on partnering with educational institutions and professional organizations to increase access to diverse candidates.
Marathon organizations leverage these relationships and manage university recruiting programs targeting their specific needs, frequently using a campus team structure. Increasingly, organizations are holding managers accountable for recruiting and hiring diverse candidates.
Through partnerships with UNCF and the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, we offer scholarships, internships and mentoring for eligible students majoring in technical and business disciplines. Marathon employed 36 UNCF and HSF interns from colleges across the U.S. in 2010. A total of 118 UNCF/HSF students have worked as interns at Marathon from 2005-2010, some for two or three internships. Marathon has hired 23 UNCF/HSF student interns as full-time employees.
In addition, we have expanded our U.S. recruiting efforts at Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Hispanic Serving Institutions. We partner with many other universities to expand the pool of potential candidates.
To further build our pipeline of diverse talent for the future, we also invest in STEM initiatives and partner with local schools, the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering, and industry programs to provide educational opportunities for the next generation of workers.
To reach potential technical and operations employees in refinery communities, Marathon sponsors process technology programs and scholarships at community colleges and provides workshops on pre-employment testing. Additional efforts are in place to increase women and minority participation in development and leadership programs. We are including a wider scope of employees in local leadership team meetings and providing temporary developmental supervisory roles for refinery hourly personnel during turnarounds and projects.
Marathon’s commitment to the community is deeply rooted in our core values. Our employee-run Books for Bioko program collects supplies for schools in Equatorial Guinea.
