Social Investments

At Marathon Oil, we view our philanthropic programs as a partnership with key non-profit organizations. Together we invest our time and financial resources to address social issues that impact the success of our business and the communities where we live and work.

When identifying partnerships, we engage with stakeholders to understand how our operations impact local communities, and we work with community organizations to develop and support projects that:

  • Improve local workforce capabilities through education and training programs
  • Empower socially or economically disadvantaged populations
  • Address public health issues that impact our communities, employees and contractors
  • Protect and conserve natural resources, habitats and environments

Marathon Oil Corporation does not accept unsolicited funding requests. Our philanthropic resources are allocated to organizations and programs that have been evaluated and determined to align with our targeted areas of interest.

We have a track record of investing in education from kindergarten through college to strengthen the communities where we operate and build the future workforce.

We support science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) curriculum enhancements, literacy, teacher training and development, programs aimed at meeting community social needs that impact educational outcomes, and college scholarships.

Our goals are to stimulate interest in STEM fields and increase the number of students who finish high school and continue their education at a two- or four-year college. We hope pursuing STEM fields leads some of these students to work for Marathon Oil and be industry leaders in the future.

Marathon Oil’s Integrated Education Funding Model ensures our investments drive meaningful change in academic performance, graduation rates and interest in STEM fields. The model helps us identify promising programs and measure effectiveness. In addition, it guides stakeholder engagement to address outside factors that can impact the outcomes of educational programs, such as parental support and underlying social issues.

The model establishes roles and responsibilities in helping children succeed in school. Marathon Oil’s role is to provide financial assistance and volunteers for mentoring, tutoring, reading programs and campus relations. Other stakeholders include community organizations, parents, teachers and school districts, four-year colleges and vocational/technical programs.


 Our health and human services partnerships are focused on educating our employees and communities about the major causes of death in the U.S. and other western operating areas: heart disease, stroke and cancer. 

Partnering for Heart Health

Marathon Oil has an ongoing partnership with the American Heart Association (AHA) as part of our commitment to the health and wellbeing of our employees, their families and communities where we work. AHA emphasizes prevention and building healthier lives free from cardiovascular disease and stroke, which helps ensure a healthy workforce.

Racing to Beat Breast Cancer

Marathon Oil has a long association with  Susan G. Komen For the Cure®, an organization dedicated to the fight against breast cancer through cutting edge research, education and awareness, screening and early detection and life saving treatment.  Over the years, Marathon Oil has provided board support, funding through event sponsorship and employee fundraising, and hundreds of volunteers.  As the Local Presenting Sponsor of the Komen Houston Race For the Cure® for more than 12 years, we continue to support research and breast cancer awareness programs in the Greater Houston area. 

To act on our core value of environmental stewardship, Marathon Oil seeks opportunities to protect and conserve natural resources, habitats and environments through social investment and philanthropic giving.

Planting for Houston's Future

Trees For Houston and Marathon Oil have partnered to build a tree farm and education center opening in April, 2013.  This 3-acre property will serve as a seedling farm and education center that will benefit the Houston community. 


Engaging Children in Energy Awareness

The Houston Museum of Natural Science (HMNS) Energy Conservation Club presented by Marathon Oil is a platform for engaging children in energy conservation, efficiency and appropriate use of resources. Participation encourages kids to develop a sense of civic responsibility around energy conservation and spread awareness to their families and communities.

Raising awareness about energy conservation and efficiency aligns well with Marathon Oil's efforts to address climate change. Marathon Oil employees serve as Energy Conservation Mentors and participate in other ways. Our Project Development group has adopted the Energy Conservation Club and will help develop program content.

Bringing the Houston Zoo to the World

Marathon Oil supports the Houston Zoo distance learning program to schoolchildren who are unable to take field trips to the Zoo due to location, travel expenses and school budget cuts.

Through the power of distance learning, the Houston Zoo carries students from the pristine prairies of the Gulf Coast of Texas to the flowing grasslands of Africa. The Houston Zoo invites classes to connect with them as they use animal artifacts and live animals to teach interactive, standard-based lessons that allow students to travel around the globe without ever leaving their classroom.


Marathon Oil partners with performing and visual arts organizations on programming that educates and engages children and links to our values and strategic goal to enhance education. We look for programs that support local and state curriculum, meet school needs and create excitement around learning and science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers.

Using Theater to Enhance Education

With Marathon Oil's support, the Alley Theatre is bringing its Performing Arts Education Initiative to Houston schools. The program uses theater to enhance English, writing, literature, social studies, the humanities and fine arts curriculum.

School educators and Alley professional teaching assistants design arts education experience to empower students to think critically, express opinions and ideas confidently and collaborate effectively.

Defining Houston's Unique Culture Through Music

Marathon Oil is Underwriter of Houston Grand Opera's (HGO) Song of Houston Education and Community Engagement Programs. Song of Houston is an innovative program that uses art and music to bring to life the stories of real Houstonians who define the unique character of our city.
