Environment and Conservation

Promoting environmental stewardship and energy conservation benefits children, schools, communities and Marathon's values and goals.

Engaging Children in Energy Awareness

The Houston Museum of Natural Science (HMNS) Energy Conservation Club presented by Marathon Oil is a platform for engaging children in energy conservation, efficiency and appropriate use of resources. Participation encourages kids to develop a sense of civic responsibility around energy conservation and spread awareness to their families and communities.

Raising awareness about energy conservation and efficiency aligns well with Marathon's efforts to address climate change.

A web-based, interactive program that is complemented by workshops and special events at the Museum, the HMNS Energy Conservation Club is free and appropriate for all school-aged children and groups including home schools, public and private schools, church groups and scouts. Program content includes:

  • Energy and conservation information
  • Carbon footprint calculators
  • Energy news
  • Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills-based learning activities, classroom projects and much more.

Marathon employees serve as Energy Conservation Mentors and participate in other ways. Our Project Development group has adopted the Energy Conservation Club and will help develop program content.

Bringing Zoo Animals to Schools via Distance Learning Programs

Marathon is supporting expansion of Houston Zoo distance learning programs to schoolchildren who are unable to take field trips to the Zoo due to school budget cuts.

The Houston Zoo, through its Education Department and its Naturally Wild Conservation Program, provides science-based curriculum on wildlife and wild places. New distance learning programs delivered via the Internet will enable thousands more children and teachers to benefit from the zoo's extensive educational offerings. A pilot program is scheduled to rollout for the Fall 2011 school year.
