Health and Human Services

Our health and human services partnerships are focused on educating our employees and communities about the major causes of death in the U.S. and other western operating areas: heart disease, stroke and cancer. This aligns with our wellness program designed to reduce health risks and with other initiatives to improve the health of employees and their families.

Partnering for Heart Health

Our partnership with the American Heart Association (AHA) emphasizes prevention and supports the organization's mission of building healthier lives free from cardiovascular disease and stroke. Our support includes:

  • The annual Marathon Oil Corporation Paul "Bear" Bryant Awards event, which raises funds to fight heart disease and stroke and honors excellence in coaching with a Coach of the Year and Lifetime Achievement winner.
  • The AHA's Go Red for Women campaign, which provides events and resources to help women make lifestyle changes to live longer, stronger lives.
  • Encouraging everyone to take the 7 Simple Steps to a Healthier Life to assess their cardiovascular health factors and start working to lower risks.

Racing to Beat Breast Cancer

Marathon has a long association with Susan G. Komen For the Cure®, an organization dedicated to education and research about breast cancer causes, treatment and the search for a cure. Over the years, we have provided board support, funding and hundreds of volunteers for the annual Race For the Cure® as the Local Presenting Sponsor in Houston.

We are exploring ways to leverage our relationships with Komen, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and Stavanger (Norway) University Hospital to have an even greater impact on fighting breast cancer.

Fundraising for HIV/AIDS and Chronic Illness Management

In addition, Marathon is signed on to sponsor AIDS Foundation Houston Inc.'s (AFH) annual fundraising walk for three years. The mission of AFH is to create positive social impact through the innovative management of HIV/AIDS and other chronic illnesses.
