Marathon Oil strives for continuous improvement to our process safety culture and performance. Process safety refers to the control of process hazards with the potential to impact people, property and the environment. Process safety management is designed to prevent, control and mitigate unintentional releases of highly hazardous chemicals. In the U.S., OSHA's Process Safety Management of Highly Hazardous Chemicals Regulation is the framework of this management system. Regulatory authorities in some non-U.S. countries maintain similar standards.
Marathon applies various process safety principles in our operations worldwide, to appropriately manage process safety.
Marathon focuses on preventing process safety incidents and managing risks with practices formalized in our Process Safety Standards. These include:
Process Safety performance is continually tracked to monitor strengths and assess opportunities for improvement. This monitoring includes periodic auditing of process safety elements to validate and support metric data. Marathon Oil has adopted the scope, definitions and applicability of reporting and tracking Process Safety Performance Indicators directly from API Recommended Practice 754 Process Safety Performance Indicators for the Refining and Petrochemical Industries (API RP 754).
The adoption of API RP 754 by Marathon as the philosophy for identifying and tracking Process Safety Performance Indicators results in broader tracking in scope, definition, applicability and categorization than the strict regulatory definitions used by OSHA, EPA or other regulatory agencies, as well as promotes industry benchmarking.
At Marathon, dedicated process safety professionals around the globe oversee all aspects of the process safety management system and ensure operations maintain a culture of vulnerability in order to prevent incidents.
Marathon’s commitment to the community is deeply rooted in our core values. Our employee-run Books for Bioko program collects supplies for schools in Equatorial Guinea.
