Oil sands

Marathon Oil acquired several interests in Alberta (Canada) oil sands projects in 2007. Mining efforts are conducted within the outside-operated Athabasca Oil Sands Project (AOSP), while development of in-situ resources via Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) on Marathon Oil-operated leases is under review.

Several proprietary technologies are also under development; these technologies address the full range of heavy oil resources, from surface mines to in-situ deposits.

Solvent Extraction

This proprietary solvent extraction technology developed by Marathon Oil could replace current processes within mining operations where wet tailings are collected in ponds and dried/reclaimed over time. Solvent Extraction technology produces “dry stackable tailings” that can be immediately re-deposited in the mine as back-fill.
