In San Antonio, Marathon Oil Helps Make the River Run Clean

April, 2018 — Houston, Texas

The famed River Walk in San Antonio, Texas, is a section of the San Antonio River that forms a horseshoe now lined with hotels and attractions. But the river is much more than its tourist section, and Marathon Oil is helping to keep the overall waterway healthy for all who live in the region.

We support the San Antonio River Authority (SARA) in two significant river health projects: household hazardous waste collection and riverbank cleanup efforts.

As the sole corporate sponsor of SARA’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event each spring in Karnes County, we’ve donated a total of $52,000 over the past five years to help collect household waste that might otherwise end up in the local water stream, such as paint, motor oil, cleaning products, and pharmaceuticals. The event also gives residents an opportunity to properly dispose of oil filters, tires, small electronic appliances and computer components.

For Marathon Oil, these waterway projects are a natural way to give back to the community. “The SARA events align perfectly with our values of environmental stewardship and social responsibility.”

“Marathon Oil’s support is of immense value to our ability to host this event,” said Chelsea Giles, Intergovernmental Relations Coordinator for SARA. “We really appreciate it.” She noted that despite poor weather, the event held on March 3 collected more than 500 tires and more than 120 pounds of pharmaceuticals.

Marathon Oil employees in the Eagle Ford region also pitch in to support SARA by volunteering for a twice-yearly cleanup effort along the banks of the San Antonio River just south of downtown San Antonio.

For Marathon Oil, these waterway projects are a natural way to give back to the community. “The SARA events align perfectly with our values of environmental stewardship and social responsibility,” said Briana Lyssy, Government & Community Affairs lead for Marathon Oil in the Eagle Ford region.
